Hello,
I was married for 2 months before she left. When she left, she gave me
back the wedding and engagement rings. Now, some years later, I am
thinking of remarrying and would like to know anyone's thoughts on
taking the rings from the first marriage to a jeweler and having them
reset into a new engagement / wedding rings. Is this a bad thing to
do? If so, what should I do with the old rings?

thanks

I'd discuss it with the woman you plan to marry.
Some would be fine with the same stones reset into a new
ring, but others might have a problem with that. Since
it's one of those emotional responses that has little to
do with logic or sense, I don't think you can go by
anyone else's reaction, nor can you likely change her
reaction, no matter how silly it seems.

Best wishes,
Ericka

That is a good idea but I guess I am a little worried about even
bringing up a subject such as this. While I do believe that I know her
pretty well, I am not entirely sure if this is generally considered a
bad taboo and as such - should be avoid at all cost.

Here's a thought, I could just ask her if she wanted the ring because
I was going to sell it. But then she might think that I was selling it
to buy her one. If I did sell it and use the proceeds to buy a new
one, once again, is this taboo --- dirty money from the sale of a
broken ring?

My head is spinning...... I am caught between the shear fact that this
diamond is just that, compressed carbon without history of its owner,
and the desire not to make a mistake.

This ring once held a special meaning to me but with the passing of
that relationship it once again became just gold and carbon. Cleansed
of any previous meaning. Anew again!

I should have stayed in bed today.

If you're really worried, I would go to a reputable
neighborhood jeweler and see what you could work out in the
way of a trade. That ought to get you a decent value for
the old ring and let you start fresh with a new ring.
I don't think it's all that unusual for someone to
feel some sort of association between an engagement
ring or an engagement diamond and the relationship,
so if you wanted to be on the safe side, this would
probably work for you.

Best wishes,
Ericka
